For turkeys, the term "cage-free" is essentially meaningless.
Unlike chickens used for egg production, turkeys are not typically raised in cages. This label is often used as a marketing tactic, as all commercially raised turkeys in the U.S. are raised in barns or on pasture.
While it might seem like a positive label, it doesn't necessarily indicate better living conditions or more humane treatment compared to standard turkey farming practices.
To truly understand the conditions in which a turkey was raised, look for labels like "Certified Humane" or "Animal Welfare Approved." These certifications often involve stricter standards for animal welfare, including factors like outdoor access, enrichment, and reduced stress.
