Ground Turkey Savory Meat Pie

This savory meat pie is a comforting and delicious meal for any occasion. The flaky pastry crust encases a flavorful filling of ground turkey, mushrooms, and aromatic spices. It's a hearty and satisfying dish that's sure to please. Who doesn't love a savory meat pie?

What You Will Need

Ingredients

For the Pastry:

  • Pastry for a double crust

For the Filling:

  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp onion flakes
  • ¼ tsp grated lemon peel
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp each: black pepper, cayenne pepper, ground allspice, ground cardamom, dried basil
  • 3 slices turkey bacon, cut up
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 lb ground turkey (93/7)
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs

The Process

Prepare the Filling:

  • In a large bowl, combine the milk, egg, parsley, onion flakes, lemon peel, salt, pepper, allspice, cardamom, and basil.
  • Add the turkey bacon and mushrooms to the bowl and mix well.
  • Add the ground turkey and bread crumbs to the bowl and mix well until combined.

Assemble the Pie:

  • Roll out 2/3 of the pastry dough to a 14-inch circle.
  • Line the bottom and sides of an 8-inch release-form cake pan.
  • Fill the pastry shell with the meat mixture.
  • Roll out the remaining pastry dough to a 12-inch circle. Cut out a circle slightly larger than the cake pan. Trim. 
  • Inside the pan, fold over the sides of the crust and place any remaining pastry scraps on top of the meat.  Cap with the circle of dough. 
  • Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

Bake the Pie:

  • Place a sheet pan in the oven on the shelf under the pie in case it leaks.
  • Bake uncovered in a preheated 400°F oven for 40-45 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is cooked through. Check internal temperature. It should be at least 165 degrees.  If not, bake for another 10 minutes. If the crust becomes too brown, cover it with foil and continue baking until it’s a safe internal temperature of at least 165 degrees
  • Let the pie cool for 10 minutes before serving.
